Planning the future
Projects for 2009 include:
A water borehole.was drilled in 2008. This opens up the scope
for more adventurous growing and also for keeping pigs and other stock.
The water table is high in this area, so water supplies are plentiful and our
usage is eco friendly.
Whilst the rest of England had a wet, pretty miserable summer, 2008 in East
Kent was warm and very dry, an excellent holiday location. There was almost
no rainfall in June, July and August. This proved that many crops will
grow with very little irrigation, with mulching and other techniques being
used for water conservation. Some projects however need water. These include
the polytunnel and keeping pigs.
The polytunnelis being erected. It will not be so large as
to dominate but will allow wet weather gardening, teaching and a longer growing
season. Even if the sun fails to shine when you visit, there will be
plenty to do! Learning new techniques is never ending.
Wildlife pond. With water available, a pond is being created. This will add to the ambitious million ponds project – a good resource for learning about making your own, visit: http://www.pondconservation.org.uk/millionponds/
Pigs. 2009 will see the arrival of the first pigs to
live on the field. They will be Black & Local rather than Green & Local!
Bees. As the hedgerows, wildflowers and clover mature, the field is becoming more bee friendly. We are looking for local bee enthusiasts to establish some hives.
Learning holidays and activity holidays. East Kent is a wonderful place to visit for a relaxing holiday. For those who prefer some activity and tutored programmes, see our learning page.
